Profits soared by 244%! Amazon’s hegemony is hard to shake!

According to reports, Amazon said in a statement that its net profit in the third quarter of 2023 was $9.9 billion, up 244% from $2.9 billion in the same period last year. This income includes the pre-tax income of $1.2 billion from Rivian Automotive’s common stock investment, while the pre-tax income from investment in the third quarter of 2022 was $1.1 billion.

Among them, net sales increased by 3% year-on-year to US$ 143.1 billion, compared with US$ 127.1 billion in the same period in 2022. Sales in North America increased by 11% to US$ 87.9 billion, while turnover in international departments reached US$ 32.1 billion, up 16% from a year ago. As far as its cloud business is concerned, the sales of Amazon Web Services (AWS) increased by 12% year-on-year to reach $23.1 billion. Its advertising revenue reached $12.06 billion, an increase of 25% over the same period in 2022. In addition, the operating profit during the period increased to $11.2 billion, compared with $2.5 billion in the same period last year. In the first nine months from January to September, Amazon accumulated a profit of $19.801 billion, compared with a loss of $3 billion in the same period in 2022.

According to the report, Germany, Italy and France are the most active countries in Europe, with an average monthly active users of 60.4 million, 38.1 million and 34.6 million respectively. Followed by Spain (25 million), Austria (5.6 million), the Netherlands (4.6 million) and Sweden (2 million). Compared with the national population of these countries, these figures show that Amazon’s position among European consumers is growing.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that Amazon performed strongly in the third quarter. In the performance release, Amazon also emphasized the progress made by AWS in generating artificial intelligence, including Amazon Bedrock chips and code whisperer: “AWS continues to innovate and deliver rapidly, especially in the field of generating artificial intelligence.”

Looking forward to the fourth quarter of this year, Amazon expects net sales to be between 160 billion and 167 billion US dollars, or an increase of 7% to 12% compared with the fourth quarter of 2022. In addition, the company expects operating profit to be between $7 billion and $11 billion, compared with $2.7 billion in the fourth quarter of 2022.
